## Many institutions offer second chance maths exams for entry to courses where a pass in maths is required.

This year, over 3,700 students failed Leaving Certificate Maths. The majority of Maths fails came from students sitting the Ordinary Level paper, where the failure rate was just over 10%. At Higher Level, just under 2% failed the Leaving Cert Maths exam. While failing a subject can be a source of disappointment and failing Maths can raise concerns about course options at third level, it does not mean that you cannot progress to a degree course.

It is true that many Engineering and ICT courses have a pass in Maths as a entry requirement. Therefore, students who fail LC Maths may feel that they have spoiled their chances of accessing these courses. However, many universities and institutes of technology around the country run **Second Chance Maths Exams** for students who have failed Leaving Cert Maths. These exams give students another opportunity to demonstrate their competency in Mathematics and fulfil the Maths entry requirements for a number of degree courses.

**Note: **Those who failed Higher Level Maths should rememeber that many Engineering and ICT courses which accept a pass in Ordinary Level Maths will accept a H7 grade in the Higher Level Maths exam.
