Young learners from Montrose Primary School were among the highest-ranked learners in the Horizon Mathematics Competition.
Grade 7 learner Jonathan Penumala beat over 80 000 other learners to be awarded first place in the competition. Also placing in the top ten were Victor Mathee in fourth place and Sinni Chandra in ninth place.
Sophia Germishuizen, the mathematics subject manager at Montrose Primary School, congratulated all the learners who placed within the top 200 in the country for making their school proud.
Learners in grades 4 to 7 from 479 primary schools took part in the first round of the competition. Less than 10 000 learners qualified for the second round. The top 192 learners from Gauteng were invited to the awards ceremony at the Linder Auditorium at the University of Witwatersrand. The top 192 was made up of 142 learners from Grade 7, 31 learners from Grade 6, 18 learners from Grade 5 and one Grade 4 learner.
Prizes including an iPad and cell phones are offered to the top learners to encourage the interest in mathematics. The competition aims to encourage learners and spark an interest in mathematics from a young age.
The competition seeks to reach individual learners, irrespective of their race, creed and social or financial background and encourage learners and schools to start a mathematics team.
Germishuizen added that for the past three years, Montrose Primary School has previously received trophies and certificates for being the second-best performing school in Gauteng. This year, Montrose was awarded first place for best performing school in Gauteng. Montrose was also awarded second and fourth place for being top mathematics educators. “We would also like to take the opportunity to thank the parents for your wonderful support. We salute you and your children.”
