Thiruvananthapuram: A teacher from Kerala has been arrested allegedly for molesting an autistic student in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram. The accused has been identified as Santosh Kumar. A teacher of mathematics, the accused had been evading arrest since the past one month. Allegedly, the accused had molested the minor thrice.
The parents of the 10-year-old had lodged a complaint against the accused around a month ago. Kumar has been booked under Section 377 (unnatural sexual offence), Section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, Section 75 (punishment for cruelty to child) of the Juvenile Justice Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The FIR in relation to the incident had been registered on July 27 and a police official familiar with the case said that the molestation had begun around two weeks prior to that. After there was a delay in the arrest of the accused, the 10-year-old boy’s mother had lodged a complaint with M R Ajit Kumar, Police Commissioner (city). After around a month, the accused was arrested by the police.
The incident came to light after the minor’s parents noticed a change in his behaviour. When they took him to a therapist, the minor narrated his ordeal to him. Reportedly, the accused used to lure the minor with chocolates and biscuits before molesting him.
In the complaint, it was mentioned that the minor had been molested thrice by the accused. After the allegations surfaced, a panel of child mental health officials confirmed that the child had been molested, after which, a complaint was registered.
Physical education teacher sexually harassed student at special school in Ludhiana
This is not the first instance where a minor has bee subjected to sexual abuse by a teacher, a similar incident came to light from Ludhiana in May where a physical education teacher was accused of sexually harassing a student. Identified as Himanshu Ranjan, the 45-year-old accused was booked under Section 354 (on account of assault of criminal force with intent to outrage modesty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The minor student had lost her eyesight due to brain tuberculosis. Ranjan had allegedly kept his chair next to the minor’s chair. Initially, the minor ignored Ranjan but when he did not stop, she shared the incident with her parents. The minor’s mother went to the police and lodged a complaint against Ranjan.
